XbotGo Chameleon Review: The AI Camera That's Transformed Our Match Days

As a football dad, I’ve spent more weekends than I can count pacing up and down the sidelines watching my son Cooper’s team play. You do need to download the XbotGo app, which connects your phone to the Chameleon device via Bluetooth. Once paired, the app takes over and turns your phone into a powerful AI-tracked match camera.

Key Features That Actually Deliver

This isn’t a gimmicky gadget. The Chameleon uses advanced machine learning to track the ball and players across the field, intelligently framing the action as it moves—no need to touch your phone once recording starts.

Here are the features we’ve found most useful:

Depending on your phone’s capabilities, you can shoot in crisp 4K or 1080p HD. The footage quality is excellent—great for highlight reels or sharing with friends and family.

🤖 AI Ball & Player Tracking

The AI is genuinely impressive. Even with a chaotic under-11s game—where the ball rarely stays in one place for more than a few seconds—it keeps up, panning and zooming as needed to follow the action.

📱 Uses Your Existing Phone

There’s no need to buy a separate camera—just mount your phone in the cradle. I’ve used an iPhone 13 Pro and had great results.

🎬 Auto-Highlights

After the match, the app processes the footage and auto-selects highlights: goals, saves, fouls, and key moments. You can tweak them if needed or download clips directly to share with the team.

☁️ Optional Cloud Features

You can subscribe to cloud uploads and advanced analytics, but it’s optional. We’ve managed fine using just local storage and sharing via WhatsApp or YouTube.

Real-World Use With Cooper’s Team

We’ve used the Chameleon consistently over the past few months. Some of the highlights:

• Cooper got to re-watch his first-ever hat-trick—now immortalised in 4K!

• Coaches have used clips to show the team positional tweaks and spacing.

• Parents who couldn’t attend games can now catch up on what they missed.

What Could Be Improved (Fair Critique)

It’s not perfect, but nothing at this price point is. A few things to keep in mind:

• The AI can get slightly confused if there’s a crowded corner (like at a goalmouth scramble), but it usually corrects quickly. 

• Sometimes, if the ball passes it quickly, it can get lost, but it soon finds its way back to the gameplay.

• You’ll want a modern phone to get the best results. Older models may overheat or run out of storage quickly.

• The battery will run down fast unless you have a power bank plugged in, especially if recording in 4K.

Still, for what it costs, these are minor trade-offs.

How Does It Compare to Other Sports Cameras?

Before committing to the XbotGo Chameleon, I looked hard at alternatives. Like many grassroots parents, I considered the Veo Cam 2 and Trace Cam—both well-established options in the youth football world. And, of course, there’s the “budget route” of just filming on a phone manually from a tripod.
